SPRING is the best time of year to check the mower, chainsaw or hedge trimmer are in working order before the serious business of yard maintenance gets under way, said Illawarra Garden Equipment manager David Reilly.

``We sell as well as repair anything with a small motor as it relates to keeping the garden and yard tidy and well maintained, but it pays to check equipment early in the season."

``At the moment there's a three-day turnaround for repairs, but when the growing season really gets under way people may have to wait up to three weeks for their repairs.

``In that time the yard can get out of control, making the job of lawn mowing much harder.

``We often find people leave it until almost the last minute to check their lawnmowers, only to find they won't start because they've been sitting for some time and have stale fuel."

Mandatory water restrictions come into effect in the Illawarra next Wednesday, prohibiting the hosing of hard surfaces such as buildings and footpaths.

However, Mr Reilly said pressure washers could be part of the answer when restrictions were lifted.

``When used for removing moss from concrete pathways and pavers or dirt and stains from other areas, pressure washers use about one tenth of the water hosing would use and are much more efficient," he said.

Home owners who would like to see their surroundings free from leaves and other debris but who don't have hours every day to collect it, a blower or yard vacuum can do a great job in a short time.

As well as selling and repairing domestic garden equipment, the company also sells and repairs commercial water pumps and industrial concreting equipment.
